Self-myofascial release (SMR), or foam rolling has become common practice in the fitness industry. Foam rollers are easily accessible, at most gyms and in most sporting good aisles for a reasonable price.
Why self-myofascial release?
SMR can help improve flexibility, muscle recovery, movement efficiency, inhibit overactive muscles and reduce pain. SMR can be used with a variety of tools including a foam roller, handheld roller, massage stick, tennis, racquet or softball. Foam rollers vary in density and surface structure. SMR focuses on alleviating adhesions, commonly known at trigger points or knots, to restore optimal muscle motion and function.
How to foam roll?
Slowly roll on the targeted area until you have found the most tender spot. Once you determine where the knot is hold that spot while trying to relax into the foam roller.
